Developing Content- Table of Contents

    I did the same thing as my cover page and made a template for the table of contents so that when I got my images I could quickly just add them in an move on to the next step. For the images I was between a picture of a mangrove and this picture of a bridge. I decided to go with the picture of the bridge because I felt that you couldn’t really tell what the mangrove picture was with the white column covering half of it. 

    The next thing I worked on was the color pallet for this page. I thought the black was a little harsh and a bit out of place since on the cover all my text was white. I came up with two different options for my text colors. The first was a combination of a white background and dark grey/blue subheadings and black text. And the second was a dark grey/blue background with white writing.

    When it came down to text written down on the page, I chose 4 different spreads that I wanted to highlight and I wrote a little description for each one so the reader would be aware of what each one was about.

Developing Content-Cover Page

    I had already made a template for what I wanted my cover page to look like earlier in the planning stage, so when finalizing it, I copy and pasted different images using Canva to see what it would look like with different photos. This made it a lot easier quicker to work on the magazine, especially since I took my pictures later then I was planning on it.

    My original plan was to include both a location and a male and female model on my cover, and in the end I was between these three images:

    I still have to work on fixing up the text so that it doesn't blend so much into the background and adjust the position of some of the wording so it fits the open space of the picture better. I also need to edit the final image I end up choosing to make sure that all the colors pop and it is really clear. Overall I am really happy with the way that these pictures turned out and look with the masthead and think it is a great first page for The Wave magazine. 

 

Deep Sea Swim

 For one of my secondary coverage pieces I am making an advertisement for a bathing suit company called Deep Sea Swimwear. I shot pictures of different bikinis to put in the advertisement. 

Here is the logo for the brand of bikinis I made:

 I used a few different poses when taking pictures. I took pictures the bathing suits being worn in the water, people “tanning” with the suits on and close ups of cute details on the suits. I still have to edit these photos, these are just the rough picture. 

   I still want to take a picture of a pile of bikinis because I think it’s a basic element used a lot when advertising. Here’s an example:

Taking Pictures

 

    This weekend I went up to Jupiter beach to take my magazine photos. I brought my three friends to help model in the pictures. I alternated between using both my phone and a camera to take the pictures because although the quality was better on the camera, the lighting settings were not working and the images looked brighter on my phone. We took pictures beneath a bridge, and at the beach both places has cool additional elements in them to help elevate the photos such as driftwood, mangroves, rocks and crystal blue water. 

    I took pictures of both my friends posing and then of the actual individual locations in case I decided I wanted to use a picture of a destination without a model as my cover image. There were people at the bridge so it was difficult to get all the angles I wanted to of Marilynn posing because I had to make sure I didn't get them in the background. I really liked a lot of the photos I took and think I will use one of them from this shooting day as my cover because the water was so blue it would make the cover pop. 

    I still have to upload and edit a lot of my pictures because I took over 500. Throughout the week I will pull out my favorites and make sure they fit the vibe of my magazine with the masthead and stories. 

                           

Masthead Analysis and Design

 

    In travel leisure, all the words are horizontal and are bolded large white letters. It is also written in all caps. Additional information about the magazine such as if it is a special feature, is above and written smaller. I will use the all white letters from this example in my masthead and write it in all capital letters. 

    In Explore magazine, it is very similar to Travel Leisure and is written in white block like letters. Unlike the other example though, it is written in all lowercase. I do not like the look of all lowercase letters, it makes the masthead feel like it is not as important, and because of this I will not use them. 

    This masthead example is my favorite by far. I like how the first word is horizontal against the second one and a little smaller to leave focus for the word "travel". I also really like how the font is on the skinnier side and has more of a sophisticated feel to it instead of bubble letters that would also be used on a teen focused magazine. I will use the combination of vertical and horizontal letters and the font style from this example. 

MY MASTHEAD WILL INCLUDE:

-All white letters

-All caps

-One horizontal and vertical word

-Skinny, sophisticated looking top

This is the rough draft of my masthead. I am still working with a few different font samples to get it the way I want it exactly. 

    

Picking Images

 On shooting day, I took over 700 photos between my phone and the camera I was using. Over the next few days I went through and sorted through the images and started to pull the best from the different locations we visited. I kept the images with the best lighting, poses and angles of the image to ensure I get the best pictures for my magazine.

 For example:

The lighting in the image is to dark. The sun was hidden behind the clouds and both models appear to not be as highlighted as they now blend in with the background without any light.

In this image, the lighting was a little off still and the pose is to off guard. I would prefer to go with a photo that has a bit more structure to it in the magazine. 

I like this a lot more for the magazine. The lighting is a lot brighter and while it still isn’t perfect I can edit it to make it look more naturally bright easier then the other images. In the image they also look a lot for posed then some of the others. It gives the magazine a more editorial look which is what I was hoping for.
